A video in which the iconic lion statue at the Ginza Mitsukoshi department store comes to life has been created as a joint project by the store and the jewelry retailer Wako Co., both of which are located in the 4-chome area of Tokyo’s Ginza district.

4-chome is one of the busiest parts of Ginza, as it faces an intersection where the district’s main thoroughfares meet. The clock tower on the roof of the building that houses Wako has become a symbol of Ginza.

The video, about 40 seconds long, shows the lion begin moving, leave its place at the entrance of Ginza Mitsukoshi, then cross the street to enter the Wako store and look out over the Ginza district from near the clock tower on the roof. It was posted to both stores’ accounts on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook on April 1.

Images of the lion’s footprints, which are seen in the video, have also been placed in locations including on the floors of both stores’ entrances, attracting people’s attention. The footprints will remain in place through Wednesday.

“Videos can reach people across language barriers. Attracting attention from people overseas should help to energize our district,” said Masanori Sugihara of Ginza Mitsukoshi’s business planning and management department.
