Head of Japan’s Electric Companies’ Group Says Rates Likely to Rise ‘In June or Later’ Due to High Crude Oil Prices

The Yomiuri Shimbun
Federation of Electric Power Companies Chairman Nozomu Mori speaks at a press conference in Tokyo on Friday.

Electricity rates are expected to rise in June or later due to soaring crude oil prices caused by the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, Chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies Nozomu Mori said at a press conference on Friday.

However, Mori, who also is the president of Kansai Electric Power Co., said that they should be able to provide a stable supply of electricity.

Mori explained that consumers’ electricity bills will reflect the rise in fuel prices, such as for liquefied natural gas and oil used in thermal power generation, at least three months after the increase.

“[Electricity rates] will rise as early as June, and the full impact will be reflected thereafter,” he said.

He said he does not anticipate electricity being in short supply.

While Mori emphasized that there is currently no need to ask consumers to conserve power, he also said, “If the government requests that consumers conserve power, we will comply.”
