AKITA — Dance troupes performed at Akita City Cultural Creation Center in Akita on Feb. 28 and March 1, in an event introducing contemporary dance to a wider audience.

About 45 dancers, from high school students to those in their 60s, delivered flawless performances before a packed audience. Between acts, audience-participation activities like stretching and improvisational theater were held, allowing attendees to freely move their bodies on stage.

“Some of the pieces were new to me, and each dancer’s unique style was wonderful,” said a 13-year-old who visited with their parents from Morioka, Iwate Prefecture.

The event, organized by the prefectural art dance association, has been held since 2021 with support from the prefectural and city governments.
