Rancho’s sign on the side of the building has a nostalgic feel.

Founded in 1969, the Rancho coffee shop is located in a residential neighborhood near Ayase Station in Adachi Ward, Tokyo. It has long been loved by local residents.

The cafe has a nostalgic atmosphere and has been used as a location in TV dramas and films. As a result, it’s attracted people in recent years who are seeking to visit the real-world settings of their favorite stories.

Colorful stained-glass-style lamps hanging from the ceiling cast a gentle light in the cafe, while the hues of the curtains and wallpaper, as well as the decorations on the pillars and partitions create a calm and soothing atmosphere. With comfortable green soft leather sofas, the place also has an exotic atmosphere reminiscent of an old American diner.

“We created this place with great care, aiming to make it a special place where customers can relax,” said Rancho owner Tatsuo Okada, 74, whose trademark is his bow tie. The cafe was opened by his mother, and it was named after “Rancho,” a Shinnai-bushi joruri storytelling song favored by his father, who enjoyed playing the shamisen as a hobby.

The interior and furnishings have been the same since the cafe was renovated in 1987, creating a space that evokes the atmosphere of the Showa-era (1926-1989).

Rancho’s specialty is napolitan — a Japan-devised pasta dish. The pasta noodles with a sticky texture are coated with sweet ketchup. It also has a good texture aided by generously cut mushrooms and other ingredients.

The flavor of the pasta, priced at ¥990, has remained unchanged since the start of the cafe. Okada, who has been helping or working at the cafe since his student days, said, “It’s the taste of my mother’s cooking etched in my memory.”

The daily set meal is also popular at Rancho.

After Rancho was used as a filming location for a music video of SixTONES in 2023, fans of the pop idol group began visiting there from all over the country. The seats used in the video are always kept vacant so visitors can take commemorative photos there, Okada said.

Okada himself appeared as an extra in one production filmed at the cafe. He said filming there gives the place another way to be loved by customers.

“I want to cherish connections with customers also through these means and keep it going as long as I’m able,” he said.
