Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom Draw Crowds in Sendai, Miyagi Pref.; Aquarium Creates Underwater ‘Cherry Blossom Viewing’ Show

Cherry blossom viewers flocked to Nishi Park in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, over the weekend as about 10 varieties, including Someiyoshino and Yamazakura, reached their peak.

The blossoms can be enjoyed through Friday.

‘Underwater’ cherry blossoms

About 250 cherry anthias swam in a tank lit up in pink at the Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium in the city, creating the illusion of cherry blossoms in full bloom underwater. Cherry anthias are known as cherry blossom red sea bream in Japan.

The “underwater cherry blossom viewing” will run as a seasonal event through Friday.
