MIYAZAKI — A sightseeing express train operated by Kyushu Railway Co. (JR Kyushu) has added Miyazaki Airport Station to its route in Miyazaki Prefecture.

The train called Umisachi Yamasachi, runs past various scenic sights along the Nichinan Coast, a coastline with diverse landscapes. The name of the train means “fruits of the sea, fruits of the mountains.”

Among the popular tourist spots passengers can view from the train windows is Oni no Sentakuita, a rocky shore in Miyazaki that translates to “demon’s washboard.”

The train departs Miyazaki Station in the morning and heads to Nango Station in Nichinan in the prefecture, then makes a return journey. It sports a characteristically warm atmosphere, which is enhanced by locally produced cedar wood used for the interior. The train makes one round trip per day on weekends and holidays as well as some weekdays during holiday seasons.

Until now, the train has never stopped at the airport’s station. When the timetable was updated on March 14, Miyazaki Airport Station was added only to the Nango-bound trip. JR Kyushu is hoping that more tourists will use the service now that the connection from the airport has become more convenient. Another change is that the train now spends about 2½ hours at Nango Station before starting the return journey, about 50 minutes more than before.

On March 14, a ceremony was held at Miyazaki Airport Station, in which local luminaries and delegates from JR Kyushu’s Miyazaki branch office saw the train off.
