Four of the people confirmed in Tokyo to be infected with measles between March 17 and 20 may have come into contact with many people in airplanes and airports, among other places, the Tokyo metropolitan government said Tuesday.
The cumulative number of measles cases this year stood at 41, exceeding the 34 cases logged for the entire previous year.
According to the metropolitan government, a man in his 20s residing outside Tokyo boarded All Nippon Airways Flight 850 from Bangkok and arrived at Haneda Airport at 5:45 a.m. on March 10. After that, he may have come into contact with many people at the arrival lobby on the first floor of Terminal 1 and the basement level (between about 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., and between about 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively), as well as in the departure lobby on the third floor of Terminal 3 (between about 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.). He developed symptoms on March 7, and his infection was confirmed on March 17.
A man in his 30s living in Tokyo boarded Jin Air Flight 218 from Narita Airport, bound for Incheon Airport, South Korea, at 12:40 p.m. on March 7. He returned to Narita Airport on Jin Air Flight 217 on the morning of March 8. From March 10 to 16, he shopped for about 15 minutes each evening at the “York Foods with The Garden Jiyugaoka Shinjuku Tomihisa Store” (Shinjuku Ward). He developed symptoms on March 8, and his infection was confirmed on March 18.
The other two were not confirmed to have flown, but they had gone to places such as a lobby of a hospital and a pachinko parlor in Tokyo.
