Crown Princess Kiko, the wife of Crown Prince Akishino, and their second daughter, Princess Kako, appreciated an exhibition by the Yamamura school of ikebana at Nihonbashi Takashimaya department store in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, on Wednesday.

The Yamamura school has traditionally been headed by the chief nun of Enshoji temple in Nara, which has close connections with the Imperial family. Among the approximately 70 exhibits is an ikebana arrangement in an Obori Soma ware vase, a traditional craft in the town of Namie, Fukushima Prefecture.

Crown Princess Kiko heard from a guide the thoughts of the work’s creator.

“It is very important that we never forget [the Great East Japan Earthquake],” the crown princess said.

After the visit to the exhibition, Princess Kako told reporters, “The harmony of the flowers and the vases was creating a wonderful space.”
