LONDON — The leaders of Japan, Britain, France, Germany, Canada and 10 other countries, plus the European Union, expressed support on Wednesday for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a “lasting end to the war,” according to a joint statement issued following the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. With Israel’s continuing attacks in mind, they also called for the ceasefire to be upheld in Lebanon as well.

The joint statement said that progress in such negotiations would “be crucial to protect the civilian population of Iran and ensure security in the region.” The statement also clearly noted, “It can avert a severe global energy crisis.”

It further stated, “We support these diplomatic efforts,” and underscored that the governments of the countries making the statement would “contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
