Toyota Motor Corp. on Thursday began selling its Tundra pickup truck and Highlander SUV in Tokyo. Both vehicles are manufactured at the automaker’s plants in the United States.

The move utilizes a new government system designed to facilitate the import of U.S.-made vehicles, following the Japan-U.S. tariff negotiations. While initial sales have begun in Tokyo, the company plans to expand sales nationwide from this summer.

The Tundra is produced at Toyota’s Texas plant and is priced at ¥12 million, including tax. The company plans to sell 80 units per month nationwide. The Highlander, manufactured at the company’s Indiana plant, is priced at ¥8.6 million, including tax, with a monthly sales target of 40 units.

Under the new system, vehicles that meet U.S. safety standards can be imported through a document review process, without the need for additional testing. The program aims to help reduce the U.S. trade deficit with Japan.

Toyota also plans to import its Camry sedan, while Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. plan to sell SUVs and other models produced in the United States domestically.
