Cherry blossoms along the Sumida River have reached peak bloom this week.

The historic viewing spot for the blossoms is said to have been created when Tokugawa shoguns ordered the planting of cherry trees on both sides of the river around the 17th- 18th centuries during Edo period. Roughly 900 cherry tree varieties including Someiyoshino and oshimazakura dot the paths following the riverbanks.

People enjoyed walking along the paths under the pale pink cherry blossoms while taking photos.
