Yamazakura Cherry Blossoms in Tokyo Bloom Out of Ginkgo Tree

Yamazakura cherry tree blossoms are seen growing out of a ginkgo tree at a shrine in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, on Monday.

Cherry blossoms growing out of a ginkgo tree are in full bloom in Adachi Ward, Tokyo.

The ginkgo tree at Mitake Shrine is approximately 200 years old and about 15 meters tall. About 15 years ago, it was discovered that some branches of a yamazakura cherry tree were growing in the middle of the ginkgo tree.

In 2013, one of the shrine’s halls was destroyed in a fire, but the adjacent main hall and the ginkgo tree escaped the flames. The cherry blossoms began to bloom while the destroyed hall was being rebuilt.

“We hope people will enjoy this rare cherry tree, which is cherished locally as a symbol of good fortune,” said a representative of the shrine. The blossoms can be viewed through this weekend.
